2011 BET Awards

I'm sorry I haven't been updating my blog like I should have been, but to be honest the fact that less than 10 people follow my blog makes me a bit hesitant to write more when I know that only a few people actually read what I write, but that will change this year because I will write more often like I did when xanga was hot in middle school and high school days.

Tonight I would like to share my opinions and thoughts on the 2011 BET Awards. I must be honest, I forgot that the awards show was on tonight because I haven't payed attention to anything BET since College Hill was on. I thought it was rather funny that my mom reminded me about the awards because she was watching it and I wasn't.

I didn't start watching the show until Jill Scott's perfomrmance, and I must say that she can sing. I've been in love with her voice since I first heard "A Long Walk" when I was eleven years old. Needless to say I loved her performance, even though I didn't understand why actor Idris Elba was on stage with her during her performance, but then again that's because I wasn't paying any attention to him while Jill was doing what she does best - singing.

I have to say that I enjoyed other performances of the show like Chris Brown's performance, Big Sean's performance, and Alicia Key's performance. But the highlight of the night was Trey Song's introduction of Kelly Rowland. I wasn't really feeling Trey's performance, mainly because it started off as a strip show early into the performance. I understand that was for his female audience, but I could have gone without that portion of the performance. When Kelly came out I was excited to see her on stage because I think she's finally stepping out of Beyonce's shadow. I don't think she'll ever be as big as Beyonce, but she's finally shining in her own light without her former group mate. I really like Kelly's current single "Motivation," and I'm glad that she performed it tonight, but I was honestly hoping that Busta Rhymes and Fabolus could have shared the stage with Kelly and Trey instead of all of those half naked male backup dancers.

The most talked about part of tonight's show however was Ms. Tiffany Greene's embarrassing moment on stage when she announced the supposed winner(s) of the Coca Cola's Viewer's Choice Award. According to Greene via Twitter, the teleprompter said, “Rihanna“, while the Evo tablet that she was holding said “Chris Brown“, and 106 & Park's Terrance J. announced Drake as the winner while standing right next to her with his co-host Rocsi. Drake was initially given the award, but at the end of the show, host Kevin Hart announced the BET winner of the Viewer’s Choice award was actually Chris Brown.

BET programming executive Stephen Hill admitted that the error was on BET’s behalf, not Tiffany Greene's. Hill stated via Twitter “That BET Awards Viewer’s Choice mix-up was due to human error. And I was the human that made that error. I apologize to ALL affected.” Although embarrassing, Greene's moment on stage became a worldwide trending topic on Twitter, and has even made her famous, gaining her tons of Twitter followers and support amongst the amount of ridicule that came her way earlier tonight.

Even though this was not BET's best awards show, I must say that I did enjoy watching the show live and tweeting with other users via Twitter so they could see my reactions to the show and I could hear theirs. I can also say that during the After Party that aired after the awards show, Big Sean told Big Tigga that last year he was watching the BET Awards on the couch, and this year he got to be a part of it. I was watching this years show on the couch so there's hope for me yet. SoloStar signing out. Stay up, and stay blessed.
